Lucky Penny Tattoo

Lucky Penny Tattoo was born from two artists — Ruthless Rojas and Byron Rojas — who came from the West Coast with a shared love for tattooing, our family, and community. Coming from Mexican and Filipino backgrounds, we were raised with a deep appreciation for heritage, family, and community. These aren't simply parts of our lives — they are part of who we are.

When our journey brought us to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, we recognized something familiar. Throughout the U.P., we found a community with its own incredible sense of identity — generations of Finnish heritage, hard-working families, a deep connection to the land and water, and people who genuinely take pride in this beautiful place they call home. We wanted to become part of that.

There was one element woven throughout the history of the U.P. that really stood out to us: copper. For generations, copper has been inseparable from the identity of this region — pulled from the earth beneath our feet, embedded in the history of the communities around us, and even reflected in the landscape itself. Copper is also one of nature's great conductors, a material capable of carrying energy. That idea became the heart of Lucky Penny Tattoo.

To us, tattooing carries an energy of its own. There's something almost magical about two people sitting together and turning an idea, a memory, a piece of heritage, or a moment in someone's life into something they will carry on their skin forever. The penny became our symbol for bringing that creative energy together with the copper heritage of our new home.

Lucky Penny isn't about two West Coast artists simply opening a tattoo shop in Houghton. Putting down roots here is about respecting the people, history, cultures, and natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula while sharing the craft that has shaped our own lives. We want to know our neighbors. We want to contribute to our community. We want to celebrate the people who make the U.P. special — and we want every person who walks through our doors to feel welcomed, respected, and part of the Lucky Penny family.
